Learning the 4 Ball Fountain

4 Balls have to be juggled in a different pattern than 3. The Balls do not switch hands. To juggle 4 balls, each hand juggles 2 balls separatly. Before you try 4 balls, you have to work on each hand individually. If you practice regularly, you should be albe to juggle 4 balls easily in anywhere from 3 weeks to 6 weeks. (maybe 8 if you are slow) Just to give you an idea, I am 14 years old, and it took me about a month to get to about 200 catches.

Getting Started

Now that you are ready to start improving your hand-eye coordination again, put 1 ball in your dominant hand. When you throw the ball, throw it about the same height as you did when learning 3. Also, give it some outward arc so it comes down on the right side of your body. (If you are using your right hand). MAKE SURE YOU CATCH THE BALL WITH THE SAME HAND THAT THREW IT. Once you can do that, put 2 balls in your dominant hand. Throw the first ball with some outward arc, as it reaches its peak, throw the second ball witht the same arc. Now stop and catch both balls. Try it again till it becomes a bit easier. When you think you are ready, try for a 3rd catch. Then try for 4, then 5. Once you have gotten 5, just go for it, and eventually it will become simple. Now put a ball in your left hand, and do the same thing that you did for your right. MAKE SURE YOU PRACTICE WITH YOUR LEFT HAND AS MUCH AS YOU DID WITH YOUR RIGHT. THIS IS IMPORTANT, MOST PEOPLE DONT WORK WITH THEIR "BAD HAND" AS MUCH AS THEY SHOULD.

Once you can get 15-20 catches with BOTH hands, try and put them together. If you want to learn the Async pattern, but you are having trouble getting it async, try to learn the sync pattern first, then switch the the async pattern. You will probably find that method much easier.

Problems and Solutions

1. I have gotten to about 8-10 catches but I cant get past that. No matter how hard I try, the balls collide, what should I do?"

Well, you want to make your pattern a bit higher, and you need more scoop, you need more scoop than you think you would need. So try to exaggerate the motion, try to make the pattern very wide. This is a very common problem (I think) because your arm isn't used to twisting it self into that position, so in time it will go away, all you can do is wait for it to go away, and it will as long as you practice. The more you practice, the faster it will go away. This problem comes back when doing 3 in one hand, and 6 balls also, it takes a long time to correct. I assume it happens with 8 too, but I dont know since I can't juggle 8 for duration, Yet.

There is not much information I can offer to you for 4 balls. All I can say is practice, I know you are thinking "I have other problems, just practicing wont fix it". You are wrong (99.9% of the time), and don't think that right now is that 0.1% if the time. I have thought that 5 times, from learning 3-7 balls, but over all, practice helps more than taking advice, eventually you will get it, don't despare.
